Located just outside of College Station in Grimes County, Catalena Ranch is on the other side of the world from South Africa. The species on Catalena Ranch were strictly selected for their ability to thrive on the natural vegetation of the Grimes County region. Pastures are lush with bahia and bermuda grass. Large oak trees provide necessary shade from summer heat. While the area is mostly flat low-land, the soil does not remain marshy. Furthermore, South African exotic animals need warm temperatures and predictable weather patterns like the climate where their genetics originate. Careful to be prepared through rain and shine, Catalena Ranch has constructed protective measures wherever possible to offset harsh weather conditions.

The Catalenas come from generation upon generation in agriculture. From their roots in Sicily, farmers migrated to the Brazos River bottom in Texas for its rich soil and moderate climate. They started a new life and rooted their families in America while still remaining proud of Italian food and traditions. Over 100 years later, many of these immigrants’ great-grandchildren continue in agriculture. They teach their children the value of hard work and dedication required to complete the season-based cycle of tasks, year after year. Anyone in agriculture would agree, it is a lifestyle, a culture, an esteemed business, and one that reaps benefits in every category of discipline.

There are many translatable elements between cattle and super exotic ranching such as understanding the importance of excellent nutrition and herd-based behavioral patterns. The ability to perceive animals’ maternal instincts, potential signs of distress, and risks of predators or illnesses is necessary to both cattle and exotics operations. At the same time, each species is unique. For example, some of the super exotic species prefer to browse; others are primarily grazers. Some species are more predator-proof than their neighbors. Some have better maternal instincts. Ranchers need to consider the characteristics of each species along with the time and value of the animals to determine the right mix for their operation.

The most important tool for success is securing a network of consultants who have tested and proven various methods for ranching. Cameras at each feeding station and gate entrance provide live and recorded video day and night. Ranchers usually drive through each pasture once or twice daily, noting that all animals are accounted for and are in excellent health condition. Multiple shelters were constructed so that each species may inhabit its own enclosed space. These shelters protect the animals from north winds and provide refuge from cold temperatures in the winter and early spring. Each building is complete with a feeding station, a trough, and custom blended minerals. For warming, propane heaters are available in each structure. The shelters are equipped with fiber for video streaming security cameras, so that Catalena Ranch’s animals may be kept safe and happy 24/7.
